Joakim

Sunday November 23rd

Live and Exclusive to Sugar

Joakim Bio

Dubbed the Godfather of French Electro by I-D magazine, Joakim is heading to Australia for the first time in November.

With a background in classical piano, it took a school-friend leaving a synthesiser in Joakim’s bedroom to lead him astray into the world of electronic music. As a result, the Parisian is hard to pin down - part club, part jazz, part indie, and part experimentalism, with DJ sets that explode!

Joakim’s solo works are some of the most extraordinarily forward-thinking in dance music - from his debut Tiger Sushi (Future Talk), to the sleeper modern classic Fantômes (Versatile), to last year’s Monsters and Silly Songs (Versatile/!K7), an album recorded with his live band which garnered praise from taste-makers around the world. He’s also had tracks featured on compilations including ‘Life Beyond Mars: Bowie Covered’ (Rapster Records), Kitsuné Maison Compilation 2 and Groove Armada’s ‘Late Night Tales’.

Joakim is a major figure on the modern global music scene. Founding the Tigersushi label in 2003, he has emerged as the French producer du jour, both for his own work and the likes of Poni Hoax, My Sister Klaus and Panico.

In between all this he still finds time to remix everyone from chart darlings Simian Mobile Disco, Annie, Dj Mehdi, Tiga and Air to Australia’s own Cut Copy and Severed Heads, mix for the hugely popular NYC radio program Beats In Space, as well as curating a compilation for Parisian boutique Colette. A man of many talents, he even does the artwork for his own releases!

Of course, there has been no shortage of those wanting to lend their touch to his work, with Tim Goldsworthy (DFA) and MANDY (Get Physical) among those contributing remixes.

Some essential listening to familiarise yourself with Joakim’s brilliance would have to include his original tracks Lonely Hearts and I Wish You Were Gone (Versatile), as well as his reworks of Antena’s ‘Camino Del Sol’ (Permanent Vacation), Gucci Soundsystem’s ‘A Carpenter’ (DFA), and Principles of Geometry & Sébastien Tellier’s ‘A Mountain for President’ (Tigersushi), a must-have which featured in many DJs’ top releases of last year.

With a brand new remix album around the corner and his next artist album due in 2009, this is your chance to catch France's electro-jazz-mutant disco hero.
